Consultation for our proposed relocation and expansion of Heybridge Co-op Academy

Updated: Mar 23

Our school building in Heybridge was constructed over 100 years ago, and despite our best efforts to maintain the high standards of our learning environment, the building is no longer fit for the needs of a modern 120 place Alternative Provision School.

It is our vision for all our young people, regardless of their barriers, to achieve their full potential, enjoy positive life chances and make a positive contribution to their community. To support the achievement of our vision, it is our mission for each of our academies to maintain their status as outstanding providers of education, helping young people to succeed in their lives through learning and personal development - our estate vision supports this mission.

We are now consulting with the public on our plans to expand, replace and relocate our current school in Heybridge to a modem purpose built alternative provision school. The proposed expansion and new-build will be delivered in partnership with Essex County Council, who will be funding and developing the proposals. At this early stage Essex County Council are exploring the feasibility of the site adjacent to our existing primary site in Witham (to the rear of the former Chipping Hill Primary School) as a potential location for this.

For further information on the proposals, including our statement of need, please visit our dedicated site

Our trust values the views and opinions of the community within which it operates and we therefore encourage responses to our consultation. To support this we have set up a short online form for you to provide feedback on the proposals, which can be accessed here:

This consultation gives an opportunity for the public to express views and ask questions on the proposal. Contributions will help to inform our decisions which will be reflected in our subsequent formal application to the Department for Education for the proposed change.

This consultation period will run for 6 weeks, opening on 21st February 2022 and closing on 3rd April 2022.

We will also be holding a consultation open event on Wednesday 23rd March at 16:00-17:45 at our primary site in the former Chipping Hill Primary School, Church Street Witham. Members of the public are welcome to attend during these times and school/trust staff will be available here to discuss these proposals.

The final decision as to whether these proposals should proceed to the planning stage will be made by the Department for Education following the submission of a Significant Change Application by the Trust.

Although we are proposing to replace and relocate the current school, there is a demand for special school places in Essex, especially for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. If these proposals go ahead we would plan to continue to use the existing Heybridge site for a smaller cohort of SEND pupils. This would form part of the delivery of the Essex ‘Spend to Save’ initiative and provide appropriate education for young people struggling to succeed in mainstream schools.
